Disney’s newer animations seem to follow a set formula. Have a lead heroine, give her a fun male companion and toss in a cute sidekick and you’ve got a blockbuster on your hands. Moana uses that same formula but takes it to a nice tropical location this time.

The trailer doesn’t tell us much about the story but holy shit it’s stunning. Disney’s animation looks better than ever, especially in the daytime scenes where colours just pop out of the screen. Animation is smooth and lip syncing is perfect. The music that plays throughout the trailer is also magical and flawlessly couples with the vibrant setting of the film. You can tell this is a high-end production and Disney has spared no expense.

The voice cast is also diverse. Veteran actors such as Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (Fast and Furious Franchise) and Alan Tudyk (who also voiced characters for Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, and Zootopia) join the newcomer, Auli’i Cravalho, who herself voices the titular character. Based off the trailer, everyone seems to be amazing. Johnson especially brings his character, Maui, to life through his charismatic personality.

Disney has had a lot of success this year with their movies. They know what they’re doing and have made a lot of money doing it. Will it reach both the critical and box office success that Zootopia had? Honestly I don’t think so but I think Moana will be a fun film for the whole family to enjoy.

Synopsis from IMDB:

A young woman uses her navigational talents to set sail for a fabled island. Joining her on the adventure is her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui.
