WATCH: 'LUKE CAGE' IS THE HERO OF HARLEM IN FULL TRAILER
First there was Daredevil, then Jessica Jones. Both were great but now it’s time for Luke Cage to step in and hopefully follow the Netflix/Marvel formula to success. Based off this trailer, the show is definitely on the right track.
Luke Cage was first introduced to us in Jessica Jones, where he and Jessica had sex and broke the bed. He did other stuff too but the bed breaking was the most memorable. So anyway, here he is with his own show and it’s nice to get some backstory to the man with powers. My only problem is that the story seems a bit too close to Daredevil where you have a beginner superhero go up against the local crime lord. Regardless though, I think it’s Luke’s emotional connection to the characters around him that will set this show apart from any of the other Defenders.
Every shot in the trailer is perfect. Everything from the action to the panning shots of the city look amazing. The show wants you to know that Cage is a brute and gives you every opportunity to gaze in awe as he wreaks havoc upon those who deserve it. Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes is also an intimidating dude. He’s ruthless, he’s mad and he’s power hungry, all of which is beautifully conveyed through the unique shots of him cut into the trailer. The best of those shots of course is the one below. The placement of Biggie’s crown on his head is perfect and shows his blood thirst to be the king.
The acting all around is pretty damn good too. Mike Colter and Mahershala Ali particularly stand out in the roles of Luke Cage and Cottonmouth respectively. Rosario Dawson also reprises her role as Claire Temple, the Nick Fury of Marvel TV.
September 30th is the date to remember as that is when the entire season will be ready to stream on Netflix. If it’s anywhere close to previous Marvel shows, then it’ll be a sure fire hit that will get renewed for years to come.
