WATCH: I.O.I. SAMPLES 90S JAM BY SALT-N-PEPA IN 'WHATTA MAN' MV
To all my 90s kids out there, who else went crazy over that Salt N Pepa reference in the chorus? For the uninitiated, I.O.I samples R&B group, Salt N Pepa’s 1993 track Whatta Man. Check out the song below!
I absolutely loved the old school vibe to the track. Visually, we're given a real 90s throwback, but the good drum kickback was also quick refreshing to hear. Despite being a young Korean girl group, 아이오아이 (I.O.I) have developed a very unique, professional, fresh sound. They're an 11-member Korean girl group formed through the 2016 reality show Produce 101 on Mnet. They released their debut album Chrysalis back in April, but I expect to hear lots more from them in the coming months!
Speaking of which, who else is crazy about Nayoung’s rap?! It was lit af! She seamlessly transitioned from chorus to verse, giving us a flawless and breathtaking performance. Nayoung pulls it off with such ease, leaving me very ashamed for struggling to get through everyday conversation without tripping over my words.
The MV is beautifully produced, and it makes sure to spotlight how pretty all the performers are. It follows a struggle all girls will be familiar with – getting over a guy that clearly isn’t treating them right. And what better way to do that than with a sexy outfit, a killer makeup job and the support from your gal pals!
There were a few things I did pick up on though, the obvious one being those hair flicks at the end. Super cheesy! Also, whilst the choreography was in sync, it was a bit basic. The girls may not be able to dance, but they sure as hell can move their hips! The scenes were also shifting in and out of focus. Initially, I thought this was poor camerawork, but it proved to be an effective and unique addition stylistic touch.
