WATCH: BLAKE LIVELY BATTLES SHARK IN AMAZING FINAL TRAILER FOR 'THE SHALLOWS'
After all this promotional material, the only thing I know about The Shallows is that Blake Lively is a surfer who has to survive against a killer shark. No story. No exposition. This is what you call great marketing.
I really want to watch The Shallows. From the beach setting to the glorious colour schemes and lack of narrative, every piece of marketing for this movie has been on point from start to finish. I'm sold on the drama, the shark and Blake Lively in a bikini. All that director, Jaume Collet-Serra has to do is deliver on a great movie.
Easier said than done.
In this final trailer, a 60s' era voiceover talks a lot about becoming "self-reliant." I love the spin that this trailer puts on Lively's predicament, chalking survival up to a question of responsibility and independence.
At the end of the trailer, the voiceover says "you may think that's the end of the story. Actually, it's only the beginning." Part of me hopes that the whole Blake Lively being stranded while a shark tries to kill her isn't the most insane part of The Shallows. I'm hoping for more than the central conflict revealed to audiences, but at the same time, this looks like a survival flick that could be more successful than it deserves to be, purely because of a few great trailers.
One way or another, The Shallows is on my list.
