WATCH: YG DEBUT BLACKPINK WITH 'WHISTLE' AND 'BOOMBAYAH'; HERALDED AS THE NEW 2NE1

7 years after the debut of YG’s most famous (and only) girl group, 2NE1, they have finally debuted a successor in the form of Blackpink. Debuting with 2 new songs, Boombayah (붐바야) and Whistle (휘파람), BlackPink offers 2 sides of their music.

Boombayah - it’s exciting, it’s fresh, it accentuates YG’s music style. With 4 equally talented members, it highlights the amazing vocals and raps each member holds, not to mention their good looks and AMAZING choreography. Boombayah’s music video shows a very 4-Minute-ish vibe, with bright and flashy lights, neon backgrounds and clothing, it serves as a reminder of the vibrant entrance this hot girl group wants to set, not to mention the various times they mention “BlackPink in the area!”. Not only does the song make you want to get up and dance, BlackPink will make your hearts wrench as they shout “Oppa!”

Compared to Boombayah, Whistle is a much more relaxed, Lee-Hi-ed version of their music. The song is good, the vocals are good, but it’s a bit TOO chillaxed, it’s missing a certain edge to it. Whistle definitely has that YG hip hop style, but there’s no climax, no annoying part that gets stuck in your head for days. But the music video is definitely more favourable, maybe it’s just me, but bright and flashy lights don’t really appeal to me. This music video is much more slowed down and easy on the eyes, not to mention their outfits bring out my inner jealousy.

Maybe they haven’t lived up to my current expectations, but Blackpink definitely hold that built up YG potential, keep an eye out for these girls!!
